What is Parental Allowance in Poland
Parental allowance (rodzicielskie) is a government benefit that helps Polish families financially support their children during the first year of life. This program allows working parents to take time off work while receiving monthly payments based on their previous salary.
The Polish parental allowance system offers flexibility to match different family situations. Parents can choose between two payment options: a higher amount for a shorter period, or a lower amount spread over a longer time. This choice helps families balance their financial needs with the time they want to spend caring for their newborn.

How Parental Allowance is Calculated
Basis for Calculation
The parental allowance is calculated based on your average monthly salary from the 12 months before taking leave. If you haven't worked for 12 months, the calculation uses the actual period of employment. For employees with varying income, all forms of remuneration are included in the calculation, including bonuses, overtime pay, and commissions.
Maximum and Minimum Amounts
The parental allowance has both minimum and maximum limits. The minimum amount is 1,000 PLN per month, ensuring basic support for all parents. The maximum allowance is calculated based on the social security contribution ceiling, currently around 21,000 PLN per month. These limits are updated annually to reflect economic conditions.
Tax Implications
Parental allowance benefits are subject to income tax and must be included in your annual tax return. However, no ZUS contributions are paid on these benefits. The allowance is paid by ZUS (Social Insurance Institution) and is considered taxable income. You may need to make advance tax payments depending on the amount received.
Parental Allowance Questions & Answers
How much parental allowance will I receive in Poland?
Your parental allowance is 80% of your average monthly salary from the previous 12 months if you choose the standard 32-week option, or 60% if you choose the extended 52-week option. The minimum is 1,000 PLN per month and the maximum is around 21,000 PLN per month, depending on the contribution ceiling.
Can both parents take parental leave at the same time?
Yes, both parents can take parental leave simultaneously and share the 32 or 52 weeks between them. However, the total amount of parental allowance remains the same - it's just divided between both parents based on how they split the leave time.
When should I apply for parental allowance?
You should apply for parental allowance at least 21 days before you plan to start your leave. The application is submitted to ZUS along with required documents including birth certificate, employment confirmation, and salary information. Processing typically takes 30 days.
Can I work part-time while receiving parental allowance?
Yes, you can work part-time (up to 50% of full-time hours) while receiving parental allowance, but your benefit will be reduced proportionally. This allows for gradual return to work while still receiving support. You must inform ZUS about any work arrangements during your leave.
What if I have twins or multiple babies?
For multiple births, you receive additional parental allowance. With twins, you get an extra allowance equal to the standard amount for each additional child. The maternity leave is also extended: 31 weeks for twins, 33 weeks for triplets, and 35 weeks for quadruplets or more.
Do I need to pay taxes on parental allowance?
Yes, parental allowance is subject to income tax and must be included in your annual tax return. However, you don't pay ZUS contributions on this benefit. Depending on the amount, you may need to make advance tax payments or settle at year-end through your tax return.
What happens if I lose my job while on parental leave?
You cannot be terminated while on maternity or parental leave - your job is legally protected. If your employer tries to terminate you, this is illegal and you have grounds for legal action. You continue receiving your allowance regardless of any workplace changes during your leave period.
Can foreign residents get parental allowance in Poland?
Yes, foreign residents who work in Poland and pay ZUS contributions are entitled to parental allowance on the same terms as Polish citizens. You need to have been employed and paying contributions for at least 365 days in the 2 years before the leave starts.
How does parental allowance work for B2B contracts?
B2B contractors are not automatically entitled to parental allowance unless they voluntarily pay into the sickness insurance fund. If you're on B2B and want parental benefits, you need to register for voluntary sickness insurance and pay contributions for at least 365 days before taking leave.
What documents do I need for parental allowance application?
You'll need: birth certificate, confirmation of employment and salary from your employer, ZUS application form (Z-15), your PESEL number, bank account details for payments, and medical documentation if applicable. Some documents may need to be translated if in foreign languages.
Can I extend my parental leave beyond the standard period?
After using your paid parental leave, you can take additional unpaid child care leave (urlop wychowawczy) for up to 3 years total per child. During unpaid leave, your job is still protected, but you don't receive any financial benefits from ZUS.
What's the difference between 32-week and 52-week options?
The 32-week option gives you 80% of your salary for about 8 months, while the 52-week option gives you 60% of your salary for about 12 months. The total amount received is roughly the same, but the 52-week option provides longer job protection and more time with your child at a lower monthly rate.
